Good Morning Everyone,
I hope you are all keeping well and looking forward to both the summer break and heading back to some normality next year in school. Over the summer months keep yourself fit and active outdoors. Try your best to keep up with reading books and children's magazines/comics etc. As long as you remain vigilant with handwashing you should be able to get back to normal life so dont be afraid of heading outside or off to the shops.
Academic Work
Planet Maths Lookback Chapter Pg 187 - 190
For your own sake, finish off whatever work remains undone in the school books that you have. I have no doubt that all this work will be revised next year when we are back in school so have yourself prepared for that by doing the work now, that will make things easier in September.
Regards
Mr. Griffin

Academic Tasks
Planet Maths Topic 21 Directed Number Pg 133 - 137
This week you will be learning about Positive and Negative Numbers. An easy way to think of this or where you will have heard of them before is when you watch the Weather Forecast.
Negative numbers are numbers less than Zero, Positive Numbers are greater than Zero. A Negative Number of -3 would mean that it is 3 degrees below Zero, so we can expect frost and ice, cold weather. A Positive Number showing +20 (or just 20) means that we will have relatively warm and mild weather.
Remember water freezes at 0 degrees, so that means the possibility of icy roads, snow and very cold weather. Anything less than zero is considered very cold and frosty. Minus 1 is cold but minus 10 is extremely cold. In Ireland even during the winter months we would rarely see temperatures falling as low as - 5 degrees. The higher the Minus number, the colder it would be.
Weather Forecast wise you will notice that numbers closer to ZERO or less are shown as BLUE, below ZERO or - Numbers are shown as Dark Blue (associating the numbers with cold weather, ice etc) Numbers that are greater than Zero are shown as yellow, then orange, then red as the numbers get higher and the temperature rises. Watch the Forecast and you will hopefully see lots of Orange Numbers😎
On Page 134, draw out the graph on Question A. complete all work in chapter
Starlight English; Chapter 13A and 14B. Complete both Chapters in full.
Two very interesting chapters, we have read and discussed some of this previously in class. Our old friend is on page 148!! Answer all the questions.
Abair Liom G; Chapter 16 Page 114 - 121. Tom Crean , a legend of a man. Should you ever be on your way to Dingle Co. Kerry in the future you will drive by his house in Annascaul Co.Kerry, called The South Pole Inn. There are 4 sections to read on page 114, read aloud.
Use your dictionaries to translate words you do not know. Pick one box each day, write out one sentence in Irish and then underneath translate it
Rugadh Tom Crean i gContae Chiarraí ar 20 lúil 1877. (Scríobh Gaeilge le do pheann dearg))
Tom Crean was born in Co. Kerry on the 20th of July 1877. (Scríobh Bearla le do Peann Luaidhe)
Look at box 1, on line 4 you will see " i gcabhlach"!
On Line 5 you will see "don chabhlach" and on line 8 you will see "sa chabhlach"
These words are the same word, i gcablach has an urú while both don chabhlach and sa chabhlach have a séimhiú!!
i + urú don/sa + seimhiú
Therefore when looking for this word (or words with urú's or séimhiú's) in the dictionary, take out the uru's and séimhiú's and look for the root word.
Cabhlach = Fleet, as in fleet of ships, the English Fleet, similar to the English Fleet of Ships that Horatio Hornblower sailed in.
Write out and learn the verbs on Pg 118 Bí agus Clois sa Aimsir Fháistineach.
Do all work associated with this chapter and write out the sentences into your copy.
Abair Liom Page175, Na Réamfhocail, Learn and draw out the last 12 Réamfhocail starting at "ar imeall" and ending with "Thios". Learning Na Réamfhocail will really help you with your sentence comprehension next year so take your time and do it properly.
SESE: History the Great Famine Part 2. Read and do all associated work. You can use the details I sent out last week to find the book online at cjfallon.ie
Take care Ladies and Gents and keep going with the good work. I hope you are all making the most of this break from normality and enjoying your free time.

Planet Math 5th ; Area Page 128 - 132.
Area is described as the measurement of a surface or piece of land. The area of your kitchen table would be the measurement of the surface of the table top.
Area measurement is measured in Centimetres Squared for smaller items and Metre Squared for larger items. We usually used Kilometre Squared or large pieces of land.
For regular shapes like rectangles and squares we measure the area of objects by Multiplying the Length by the Width
L x W = Area squared
On Page 128 write the blue box out into your copy and learn the main points.
On Page 129, using your math copy and its ruled squares, draw out the shapes you see on both A and B.
On page 130, write and draw out the blue box that shows you how to calculate the area of a rectangle.
On Page 130 write and draw out both blue boxes. Also draw out the shapes on part B, use your ruler.
Starlight English; Chapter 12a and 12b. Complete both Chapters in full.

If you can get your hands on some rushes why not try to make the St.Brigids cross at home!

Making a hurl would be much harder unless you have the relevant equipment so you may have to place that on the Bucket List!!

Academic Tasks
I hope you all got on OK with Percentages last week and remember that we will be revising this material when back in school.
Planet Math 5th ; Weight Pg 152 - 156. This week we will look at something different with regards to Weight. You may ask your Parents/Guardians if they have a weighing scales which will come in handy.
Look at the Instruments of Measurement on page 152, split two pages in your copy into 5 equal sections. Draw the instruments out and what they would be used to find the weight of.
Draw out the Table in section B Pg 152 in your copy.
Do one page /day, take your time and draw out any graphs, shapes and diagrams related to the work in this chapter.
Starlight English; Chapter 15b and 16a. Complete both Chapters in full. On pages 176, 177 & 178 you will see BOLD Highlighted words for instance, depths, veteran, profound etc. You will see the same in CH 16a on page 182, Hoards, decamp etc. List these words and find their meaning in the dictionary, write out the word and its meaning in your copy. Remember when answering questions in sections A, B, and C, you must write out both the questions and the answers, as we normally would in school. The same can be said for Part D.
Learn the art of Proofreading, get in the habit of looking back over your work and scanning for correct spellings. If your unsure of a spelling, whip out the dictionary and check it!
Abair Liom G; Chapter 14 Page 100 - 107. Read through Pg 100 slowly!
Take 1 story per day on page 100 and translate, using your dictionary.
For example on Monday do Superman, Tuesday The Wizard of Oz and on Wednesday do Star Wars!
For Example: Superman.
Tháinig and chéad scannán Superman amach sa bhliain 1978
The first Superman film came out in 1978.
Is scannán aicsin é.
It’s an action film.
Tá an scannán bunaithe ar ghreannán.
The film is based on humour.
We have worked on translations on many occasions Ladies and Gents so do your best, use your dictionaries and remember direct translations from Irish to English may not always be exactly the same, but translate as you would use the words.
Look at pages 179 - 182 of Abair Liom for help, you can find all the verbs here in their different tenses
Learn and write out the verbs Oscail and Inis in their future tense, An Aimsir Fháistineach, on page 104.
Go to page 175 Na Réamhfocail. Start with Chuig and Roimh, write these out and learn them. You may draw a little picture that depicts their meaning. Learn two new Réamhfocail each day, going across the page. You should stop on Ar chúl & Os Comhair on Friday.
SESE; Chapter 14 Daniel O’Connell. You may find these videos of some help, they are facts laden but they are interesting. Remember this era is before the time of the 1916 Rising
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-eEJr1o2hzM
