Hello Boys and Girls 😊 This is our final week in school! I have really enjoyed teaching each and every one of you this year. I am so disappointed that we did not get to reunite before the end of the school year. I am looking forward to seeing you all in September, however. I hope you continue to be Super Stars over the Summer holidays. Try to read as much as you can and hopefully we will have some nice weather for lots of playing outdoors. Feel free to access our Padlet over the holidays. I am not going to add any written work for our final week as you have all earned a well-deserved break. If we were in school, we would be outside as much as possible and learning through play. Also, a big THANK YOU to all the Mammies and Daddies for their help and patience during these strange months – it can’t have been easy! I hope you all have a fantastic Summer and continue to be kind and helpful.
- Ms. Kelly
Moving On
Time is flying quickly and you are growing fast,
I can’t believe this year has gone and now is in the past.
We’ve had so many lovely times; with fun along the way,
Your smile has always cheered me up on each and every day.
So remember you’re fantastic; a little shining star,
Go forward and just be yourself, just perfect as you are!
Best Wishes
From, Ms. Kelly (Junior & Senior Infants, June 2020)

Maths:
- Operation Maths: pg. 94 – 96 (money, problem solving)
- Children will be expected to recognise coins up to 5c (ie. 1c,2c,5c). Look at the side with the number. Which number can you see? Explain we call this 1c/2c/5c. On the other side show the children the harp. Each coin has a harp on the other side so what’s the difference between them now? Size! 1c is the smallest, next is 2c and 5c is the biggest. Discuss the uses for money: why do we need money? why do we use money?
- Sorting coins into 1cents, 2cents and 5cents
- Remember 2c is the same as two 1c coins. Can you swap a 5c coin for five 1c coins? This may be tricky for some children to understand.
- Visual Arts: coin rubbings: If you didn’t get time to do this last week, use paper, crayons and the three different coins. Place the coin under the paper and turn the crayon on its side on top of the paper. Rub the crayon over the paper to reveal the image of the coin below. Use lots of different colours.
- Set up a Food/Pet/Sweet/Ice-cream shop this week and place price tags on the items (1c,2c,5c). Role play: customer/shop keeper. Take turns.

Maths:
- Operation Maths: pg. 90-93 (money-1c, 2c, 5c)
- Visual Arts: coin rubbings: Use paper, crayons and the three different coins. Place the coin under the paper and turn the crayon on its side on top of the paper. Rub the crayon over the paper to reveal the image of the coin below. Use lots of different colours.
Set up a Toy shop and place price tags on the toys (1c,2c,5c). Role play! Again, if you don’t have a 5c coin is there another way you can make that amount with the coins you have?

Hello Infants 😊 I hope you are happy and keeping safe at home. I know you are doing your best with the school work but it is so important to be active and creative and keep learning through play. Maths:
- Operation Maths: pg. 83-85 (Zero)
- The concept of Zero can be difficult for some children to understand as the other numbers have a tangible and visible form (0 has no visible and tangible form). Reinforce that 0 means ‘nothing’. You can compare this to last weeks activities with capacity and the notion of an ‘empty’ container. ‘There is nothing in the container’.
-Use your fist to represent 0. Practice starting at zero (closed fist) and raising a finger for 1, another finger for 2, etc. until you have five fingers standing.
- You can further explain this by using tangible objects/toys: Make sets of objects from 0-5. Word problems: “I’ll give you 3 sweets. I will give you 0 more sweets. How many will you have now?” This needs to be demonstrated numerous times to be fully understood.
- You can use your fingers or tangible objects to complete pages 84/85. Again emphasising that Zero means ‘nothing’ (you won’t add any more).

- Five enormous dinosaurs rhyme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NyJ89OjZXTs
- Five little men in a flying saucer rhyme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2E3p_51tJx0

Operation Maths: pg. 110 - 113 (Money)
- Children will be expected to recognise coins up to 20c (1c, 2c, 5c, 10c, 20c). Use real coins if you have them to hand. What are coins used for? What coin is this? Which coin is worth the most/least? etc.
- The children will have used coins during Aistear (hour of play every day) so they should be familiar with them.
- Role Play: Can you make price tags (1c- 10c) and set up a toy shop? What two coins will we need to buy a teddy that costs 7c? Record the sum: 5c+2c=7c. Challenge: How would you pay for an item that costs 8c? Are there different coins you could use to make that amount?
- Use paper, crayons and coins to make coin rubbings: place the coin under a piece of paper. Turn the crayon on its side on top of the paper and rub it back and forth to reveal the coin below.

I am missing you all very much. I hope you are enjoying learning at home and creating some new activities and games with your family. May marks our first Summer month, I wonder can you recognise any signs of Summer? Keep yourself occupied and active and help at home as often as possible.
Parents, I know it can be very difficult to find the time to get the ‘Suggested Work’ completed, but please do not be under any pressure and only do what you can. We will be revising all of the new learning when we return to school.
